ITALIAN ARTIST’S DARK VISION OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION IN EDGY FEATURE FILM “PENTIMENTO”
Artist and Director Loredana Gasparotto has been generating buzz around her new experimental feature film “PENTIMENTO,” which is now screened in various film festivals.
This uniquely crafted film was mostly filmed in the menacing areas of Brownsville in Brooklyn, Bushwick and Dumbo. PENTIMENTO is the story of Sofia (Laura Pellegrini), a Romanian illegal immigrant who leaves behind a checkered past as an erotic dancer in her homeland to realize her dream of becoming a singer in New York City. Burdened with high rents, low wages and the scant opportunities afforded to anyone with illegal immigration status, Sofia’s hopes for success dim with each passing day. Then she meets Connor (Trevor Swann); a misfit, willfully turning away from his wealthy family to pursue his own dream of becoming a serious artist. Passions ignite quickly, as do the fears of Connor's politically- charged parents. So threatened are they by this “outsider” and the harm she might wreck upon their family, they attempt to dispose of her. As the walls close in, Connor and Sofia’s strength is tested, as is their commitment to their creativity and love.
Loredana explains that “‘Pentimento” is a dark, Romeo and Juliet-style fantasy about the dream and about the struggle. The dream is to make it spiritually and creatively. The struggle is to survive. “I saw this struggle in others and I lived it myself.”
Loredana emigrated from Italy eighteen years ago, and only last year became an official United States Citizen. “The film illustrates head-on some of the fears that compel the eleven million illegal US immigrants in our country. But I also enjoyed sharing the story. It’s about color. Emotion. It’s about texture. In a city that is so beautiful, even the dirty parts.” Loredana’s love of color on the canvass is also highlighted in her dynamic color correction.
The rest of the team is filled with many talented artists; the soundtrack is packed with impressive songs by Evelyn Horan, The Cosmic American Derelicts and Emmy & Grammy Award-Nominated film composer, Ryan Shore, the sound mix created by Grammy Award- Winner Charles de Montebello and Award-Winning Filmmaker Charles Ricciardi (“Drew: The Man Behind The Poster” Kino-Lorber) Produces and Edits.
